Family Planning and Contraception

Family planning and contraception

At Pakenham Family Health we offer counselling on family planning and contraception .

Our doctors can help individuals determine freely the number and spacing of their children. They also offer our patients information and education about the available means by which this may be achieved.

We can advise on the most suitable form of contraception that will work best for an individual’s or couple’s circumstances.

You can see one of our doctors for insertion and/or removal of a contraceptive implant (Implanon). Implanon is a small plastic rod that is inserted just under the skin of a woman’s upper arm. It releases hormone progestogen into the bloodstream. It works in three ways:

  • stops ovulation,
  • it makes the mucus in the cervix thicker, preventing the sperm from getting through,
  • it changes the lining of the uterus.

And when inserted correctly Implanon has a 99% success rate.

There are other forms of contraception available on the market today. These include combined contraceptive pill, contraceptive injections, Intrauterine Device IUD and emergency contraception. You can book an appointment with our doctors to discuss these and other forms of contraception and family planning. For more information on these go to https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/contraception-options
